What You Need to Get Started
  • A Personal Internet Service account with WNYweb
  • Your user name
  • Your password
 
Step 1: Verify that Dial-up Networking is Installed
  1. Double click `My Computer'
  2. Look for a `Dial Up Networking' folder.  If it is not there then click here for instructions on installing it.
 
Step 2: Verify that `Dial Up Adapter' and `TCP/IP Protocol' are installed
  1. Press the Start button and select Settings, then select Control Panel.
  2. Double click the Network icon.
  3. Select the Configuration tab.
  4. Both `Dial Up Adapter' and `TCP/IP' should be present.
  5. If you do not have either or both of these installed, click here for instructions on installing them.
 
Step 3: Set up Dial Up Connection
  1. Double click `My Computer'
  2. Double click `Dial Up Networking'
  3. Double click `Make New Connection'.  This will begin the Make New Connection Wizard. 
  4. Type WNYweb in the `Type the Name of the Computer You Are Dialing' box and hit Next.
  5. In the `Area Code' box type 716 or whatever your area code is.  In the `Phone Number' box type Your Local Access Number.
  6. Click the Next button.
  7. Click Finish to complete making the connection.
 
Step 4: Set Connection Properties
  1. In the `Dial Up Networking' folder right click on the WNYWeb connection once.   An option list will appear.  In that list select Properties.
  2. Make sure the `General' tab is selected.
  3. Uncheck the `Use Country Code and Area Code' box.  Picture
  4. Click the `Server Type' tab.
  5. Click the `TCP/IP Settings...' button.
  6. In the first set of two radio buttons, select `Server Assigned IP Address'
  7. In the second set of radio buttons select `Specify Name Server Address'.
  8. For the Primary DNS Server type 216.238.0.10
  9. For the Secondary DNS Server type 216.238.0.11
  10. Click on the `OK' button.
  11. Click the `OK' button again.
  12. You should now be in the `Dial Up Networking' window.  If you would like to create a shortcut on your desktop just right click on the WNYweb icon and drag it onto your desktop.
  13. A list window will then appear.  Select `Create a Shortcut Here'.
 
Step 5:  Connect
  1. Double click the `WNYweb' connection icon.
  2. Type in your User Name in the first box.
  3. Type your Password in the next box.
  4. Click the `Connect' button.
  5. Once the connection is established, open the browser of your choice to start Surfing.

Windows XP Set-up
Configuring your computer to dial-up to WNY Web is quick and easy by simply following the instructions below. If you would like assistance, please call (877) 922-9699.

Windows XP (Home or Profession Editions) Dial-up Configuration Instructions

 
1. Click your Start button (in the lower left-hand corner of your desktop). Depending on your PC's configuration, either select 'Settings' then 'Control Panel' or directly select 'Control Panel'.
2. If you see 'Pick a category' at the top of the window that opens, move to Step 3. If a window opens with a list of icons, including 'Network Connections', move to Step 4.
3. Click the 'Network and Internet Connections' icon, and then select 'Set up or change your Internet connection' under the Pick a task... section in the upper left-hand corner of the window. This will pop-up the Internet Properties window. Click the 'Setup...' button in the upper right portion of this window. Move to Step 5.
4. Double-click the 'Network Connections' icon. Under Network Tasks in the upper left, select 'Create a new connection'. Move to Step 5.
5. Click 'Next' to begin the wizard, then select Connect to Internet and click 'Next' again.
6. In the Getting Started window, select Set up my Connection Manually and click 'Next'.
7. Select Connect using a Dial-up modem and click 'Next'.
8. In the Connection Name window, type WNY Web in the ISP Name field and click 'Next'.
9. Enter your desired local modem access number in the Phone Number field, then click 'Next'. If you need to select a local modem access number, Click Here.
10. In the Connection Availability window, select the option to create this connection for Anyone's Use, then click 'Next'.
11. Enter your User name and password into the appropriate fields, and then click 'Next'.
12. On the final screen, check the box labeled 'Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop', and click 'Finish'.

At this point, your dial-up configuration is complete. To connect to the Internet, simply double-click the WNY Web icon on your desktop, enter your username and password (REMEMBER:  Your username here should be as follows: "yourusername@wnyweb.net!"  Also, BE CAREFUL! Your username and password are CaSe SeNsItIvE!), and click 'Connect'. Once connected, you will see a small icon appear in your System Tray (to the left of the digital clock in the lower right-hand corner of your screen) with the picture of two small computer monitors. To disconnect from the Internet, simply RIGHT-click on that icon, and select 'Disconnect'.
